    mmm i’ve always wondered if the very first felt was simply from dog fur sheddings compressed in a corner of the cave…

      Ha ha, but there must be moist heat and agitation, simple compression would not felt. Actually, story has it that it a nomad put camel hair between himself and saddle, by day’s end, between the perspiration and the pressure/agitation, the fiber was compressed into a nice hard felt.
